Q: Where is Chalk Walk?
A: Chalk Walk takes place throughout Downtown Oberlin, generally along Main Street (State Route 58) and College Street. Participants can spread to public walks beyond the center of downtown.
Q: What are the rules?
A: Let your creativity flow! We only ask that participants keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event and to respect entrances to businesses. Please also be safe and respectful - do not chalk on buildings, brick paths, or in the street. Permanent art materials are not permitted. Please return all unused chalk to the registration booths, and help us keep Oberlin clean by placing all waste in the nearest trash bin.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Nothing, it’s FREE! Generous individuals, non-profits, and businesses support various aspects of the day, including the chalk pastels that are distributed to all visitors for free. Please see the names below and our supporters page for more information. You can also be a supporter by donating here.
Q: How do I win?
A: Everyone is a winner! In past years, some artists were given art supplies in recognition of their work, but there are no contest winners identified by the Chalk Walk committee. We’re delighted it is a day enjoyed by all participants.
Q: It’s free and there’s no winner, so why do I have to register?
A: We ask participants to register so we can see how the event has grown over the years, know how many families are participating, and know where people are coming from. This helps us to write grants and seek funding to keep the event free to the public. We appreciate participants marking their square with their registration numbers so we can identify possible local artists for future events or seek permission to use images of the artwork for promotion materials.
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: The rain date is set for the following day (Sunday). The website and the Facebook page will be updated if the event is officially moved to Sunday.
Q: Can organizations and businesses set up information tables or pass out promotional materials at Chalk Walk?
A: Chalk Walk is organized to be a family-friendly event focused on free, creative fun. The Chalk Walk committee discourages soliciting, surveys, canvasing, display tables, or other unrelated activities.
The coordinators of the Oberlin Chalk Walk ask that everyone respect the community and artistic nature of this event, so please no solicitations.
